Listening to Jesus can become a firm house.
Built on the Rock
At the end of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus shows the difference between only hearing and practicing His word

This short devotional is about obedience, from Matthew 7:25.
The rain fell, the torrents raged, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because its foundation was on the rock.
Matthew 7:25
The scene
We are in Galilee, a land of hills and villages, where Jesus went up a mountain to teach.
At the end of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells of two men who build a house. Both heard His words: one builds on the rock, the other on the sand.
The rain comes down, torrents and winds come, and strike both houses. The one on the sand falls, and great is its collapse. The house on the rock does not fall. The difference is that one practices what he heard. The crowd is amazed at His authority.
Building on the rock kept the rain from reaching that house.
The rain struck both houses, but the one on the rock stayed standing. Jesus doesn't hide the storms: He gives us somewhere to anchor life. Trust Him.
In our day
We hear a good sermon, save a verse on the phone, agree, and the week goes on the same.
Jesus doesn’t tell this parable to scare us: He gives us firm ground in His words. The rain comes for everyone, but those who practice are not left without a foundation. Practicing does not buy God’s love; it is building on what Jesus has already given us.
Insecurity. Jesus taught with authority, and not as their scribes (Matthew 7:29).
His word is no longer a weight of rules: it is the voice of the One who loves us and knows the way. Rest in what He says.
Awe. Jesus taught with authority, and not as their scribes (Matthew 7:29).
His word is no longer a weight of rules: it is the voice of the One who loves us and knows the way. Rest in what He says.
Weariness. Jesus taught with authority, and not as their scribes (Matthew 7:29).
His word is no longer a weight of rules: it is the voice of the One who loves us and knows the way. Rest in what He says.
Trust. Jesus calls wise the one who hears and practices His words (Matthew 7:24).
A firm life is not born of our strength, but of the word Jesus gave us. Rejoice and build on it, one step at a time.
Hope. Jesus calls wise the one who hears and practices His words (Matthew 7:24).
A firm life is not born of our strength, but of the word Jesus gave us. Rejoice and build on it, one step at a time.
Steadiness. Jesus calls wise the one who hears and practices His words (Matthew 7:24).
A firm life is not born of our strength, but of the word Jesus gave us. Rejoice and build on it, one step at a time.
Today, before lunch, I will reread Matthew 7:24 and choose a simple gesture to practice what Jesus said.
Jesus gives us rock to build on.
Knowing right isn't enough. Doing it is what steadies the ground.
