This short devotional is about gratitude, from Ephesians 5:19.

Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your hearts to the Lord,

Ephesians 5:19

The scene

We are in Ephesus, a port city in Asia, with a great theater and marble streets.

In place of foolish words and jesting, thanksgiving. This is Paul’s request to the Christians of Ephesus, who were once darkness and are now light in the Lord. The reason comes first: Christ loved them and gave Himself up as an offering to God.

Then the mouth gets another use: psalms, hymns, and songs, “always giving thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ“.

Giving thanks for everything is pretending that what hurts is good.

In our day

In many conversations, the mouth runs to complaining or to the joke that puts someone down: in the family group chat, in line, at work.

Paul reminds us that we came out of darkness into light through Christ’s love. Giving thanks in the name of Jesus is not pretending everything is fine; it is remembering who stays with us. A complaint can give way to a thank-you to the Father.

And you, how are you today?Reading about giving thanks in Jesus' name, how are you?
✍️ To carry today

Today, the moment a complaint comes to my mouth, I will swap it for a thank-you to the Father, in the name of Jesus.

Christ's love came before the thank-you.

There's a whole sky hidden inside a simple thank you.
